Let's Talk About Posters

By Crystal Wilson

There are bulletin boards all over the world full of them. They are a tried and true method of increasing your visibility and getting important messages across. They definitely serve a purpose in business.
But they're hard. At least they are for me, and I've heard the same things from many others. You want to make a good visual impact, stand out from the 27 other posters on the board and clearly convey your message in a very small number of words. All at the same time. It's a lot to think about, but it is worth it - a well made, well placed poster can do wonders for your business.

I've been struggling to put together a poster for FLOW (guess what it's about? Our postering service. Funny, right?) and I thought I should share some of the things I have learned, because as I mentioned - I know a lot of you struggle with this too. My favourite pieces on the topic were this one and this one.
See the list below for what I found to be the most important things to know:

  • Decide on HOW you will get the viewer's attention. Will you use a catchy heading, a captivating image, or use colour contrast to its full advantage?
  • Decide what you want people to DO. What action are you leading them to with your text and imagery? If you aren't clear on that, they won't be either.
  • Write out the entirety of what you need to say, and then determine key words and phrases that help you get the point across with as little text as possible.
  • People need to be able to read a poster from 5 feet away. Font size and type is important. Keep the number of font styles to a minimum. Those you choose should strike a balance between "not the same old same old" and "wow that looks cool, but what does it say?" Sans-Serif fonts come recommended. Title fonts should be 72pt or higher, and copy should be at least 24pt.

Hopefully those points are helpful to you in your plight to design an eye catching, action inspiring poster for your next event, or a service you offer, or whatever else you might want to promote. If you're still stuck, get in touch with us - we have team members who can help. We can design, print, and even take your posters around Guelph and surrounding areas, so you can spend your time doing what you really love.
