Another Successful Hooping For Hunger
by crystal wilson
This past weekend we hosted our second annual hulahoop-a-thon, Hooping for Hunger. With the combined efforts of our enthusiastic team, and many generous community members this event was once again a roaring success. The May 28th event raised $8500 and that number will continue to rise, as we are accepting donations until July 1. The final amount raised will be divided evenly between Chalmers Community Services Center, and The Hunger Project Canada.
Despite the sweltering heat, 13 teams spent the afternoon at John MacCrae school, hula hooping to end chronic persistent hunger. The participants spanned decades in age, and all levels of hula hooping ability - not surprisingly a great deal of fun was had by all! Of course, the event is a fundraiser and we had a great effort put forth by the teams! The top fundraisers were:
1. Team Gill
2. Grade 8 Hoopers
3. Sue and the Girls
5. Hesitant Hoopers
This fun was not limited to the hula hooping portion of the event - although that was the main draw from some. The day was enhanced by a selection of other activities provided by some fantastic community members. Lynne Hancock, "The Bubble Lady" was there with her giant bubbles, Tania Crook from Makin' Faces / Infinite Arts made sure that anyone who wished was brightened up with beautiful face paint, and a group of young adults taking part in the United Church's "Just Youth" weekend did a great job of leading the youngest participants in games and other activities. The day was full, for sure!
All that hooping required some refueling, and there were options for everyone! West End Bakery was kind enough to donate chocolate chip cookies, and Brantview Apples provided us with apples galore! For those who needed a bit more of a boost, All Natural Handcrafted Hitchhiker Lemonade was on site with a barbecue offering hot dogs, burgers, and sausage, as well as a huge selection of their absolutely irresistible lemonade and iced tea products. See where you can purchase them here.
The event created a beautiful canvas for photographs, and luckily Elizabeth Bell, of Kids Therapy Network was there to capture the most beautiful moments. Those beautiful photos are what we will leave you with here. Donations to the fundraiser are being accepted until July 1, 2016. Head over here to donate!
