Take A Chance - Be Human
by margaret turner
Kendra Reddy had a piece in the Financial Post recently that’s all about the human connection—you might be interested. Here’s part of it:
The key to building a stellar network is to be real; stop being a commodity and start being a personality (your personality, specifically).
Most people are afraid to show people who they really are when it comes to business dealings, yet what everyone craves are true personal connections with others. No one wants to be in relationship with or share themselves (and opportunities they know of) with a 30-second elevator pitch or a list of achievements. They want you. Warts and all. What makes things unsafe is the worry that it will be unsafe. The more you worry about making a mistake and blowing it with someone, the more likely it is that the mistake will happen. The more energy you devote to worrying about whether or not someone will like you, the less energy you have to actually be you. So take a chance! Be human! Confidence comes from the heart, not the brain. Show someone your heart and you’ll have a million chances to show them your giant, smart, brain later. Trust me, what we know is overrated.
