Communication.  We all do it and we all do it differently.  We all have our own preferences and often we are better at one type of communication than another.  

When trying to be efficient and productive, it’s important to quickly identifying others’ communication preferences, which can be based on observation or can be as simple as asking someone how they like to communicate – “What’s the best way for me to communicate with you?”

It is also important to understand the context of the situation, and what that means for communication – is it urgent?  Are there a lot of details to go over?

Using these pieces of information will help you get straight to efficient and productive communication.  

It is also important to identify which type of communication is best for the situation you are in.

Here are a few of my own communication strategies: 

  • If I need a quick answer I will call the person.  Email or texting will have a delay even if it’s only a few minutes, and if the person needs to clarify anything it can quickly be done verbally.  

  • If there are a lot of details to communicate and I suspect someone will need to sit with the information or confirm things before answering, I will send an email. Depending on what I know about that person’s communication preference, I might even use a phone call and then a follow up email.

  • What if I just want to be social and build a relationship? A text will do.  

Today be aware of how you are communicating with others.  Are you only sending out emails because that is your preference? Mix it up and share your outcomes!
